Cuba prepares for Destinos Gaviota 2024, one of the most significant events in the country’s tourism industry, which will take place from October 16th to 20th in Holguín. This gathering will bring together the main stakeholders in the sector, from sales personnel and tour operators to airline representatives and specialized media. Aimed at updating partners on product improvements, recent openings, and upcoming launches for the 2024-2025 high season, this edition will be dedicated to showcasing the treasures of the Caribbean.
VI Edition of the Destinos Gaviota 2024 Tourism Fair
The event’s key objectives include honoring the top sellers, tour operators, airlines, and hotels that collaborate with the group, as well as introducing a new tourist destination, diversifying markets, and reviving strategic sectors. This year, participants will be invited to a unique experience: a journey inspired by the legend of a Pirate Treasure, set in the historical Ramón de Antilla Peninsula in Holguín.
The event promises not only thrilling adventures but also the chance to strengthen the ties between business and leisure in a previously unexplored destination, making it a milestone for the Cuban tourism industry. Among other activities, there will be a visit to Cayo Bariay, tours of the region’s hotels, a nautical excursion to Cayo Saetía, and more.
Economic Boost for Holguín
Órbita Popular exclusively interviewed Ana Karla Rodríguez Merchán, Director of Promotion for Gaviota Hotels, who announced the inauguration of the new Sierra Cristal hotel during the event. Located on the Ramón de Antilla Peninsula, the newest tourist hub of the Gaviota Group, this opening will bring significant economic benefits to the eastern region of Cuba, notably through job creation and increased tourism, which will boost sectors like excursions, restaurants, and shops, thereby stimulating the local economy.
Moreover, the hotel’s development will also boost improvements in local infrastructure, with investments in access roads, public services, and telecommunications, directly benefiting the community. The hotel’s opening will help position the Ramón de Antilla Peninsula as an emerging destination, attracting more investment and promoting the region on an international level.
Innovation and New Proposals
Ana Karla shared with Órbita Popular the ambitious projects that the Gaviota Group has underway for the coming years. One of the most innovative is the creation of themed rooms for children, designed to offer a playful and personalized experience that makes their stay more enjoyable.
Additionally, Gaviota is working on reconceptualizing its Extra-Hotel services, which will include new entertainment, shopping, and dining options in key destinations. Another highlight is the launch of a new brand within the Hoteles Playas, with which the group aims to position itself in the luxury segment, offering a more exclusive and high-end experience, in line with international trends.
She added that all these novelties and more surprises will be revealed in the upcoming edition of Destinos Gaviota 2024, reaffirming the group’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in Cuban tourism.
Holguín: History, Culture, and Beaches
Located in the eastern region of Cuba, Holguín borders Las Tunas to the west, Guantánamo to the east, Granma and Santiago de Cuba to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. This province is known for its rich historical and cultural heritage, spanning from pre-Hispanic times to the present day. Founded in 1720, the capital is called the "City of Parks" due to its urban layout and abundance of green spaces.
With a population of approximately 350,000 in the city and one million in the province, Holguín offers a blend of history, culture, and recreation. Its ancient monuments and vibrant nightlife make it a pleasure to explore. A curious highlight is its own Bodeguita del Medio, where one can enjoy a cozy atmosphere and excellent cuisine.
One of the main attractions is the Bariay Bay, home to the Bariay National Monument Park, a site of great historical significance, as it was here that Christopher Columbus landed in 1492. The park features a natural harbor, remnants of a Spanish fort, and aboriginal huts, providing an educational experience about the region's history.
It is worth mentioning that Holguín’s beaches, with their turquoise waters and white-golden sands, are among the most beautiful in the Caribbean. Playa Pesquero stands out for its natural beauty and protected coral reef.
The city of Holguín offers a wide range of activities. Exploring the coastal town of Gibara, discovering aboriginal culture in Banes, venturing into its forests, admiring the nature of Cayo Saetía, or hiking in Pinares de Mayarí are some of the most interesting options for visitors.
